About Me

Heather, on a trip to Fukuoka
Hello! Welcome to my blog. My name is Heather and I live just off the base of Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni. I'm a Detroit-area native and I'm learning my way around in Japan -  even without speaking the language - and trying to embrace all the differences between American and Japanese culture.

I am now embarking on a new kind of adventure here in Japan: my husband and I are expecting our first baby in just a few months!

I originally started this blog as a way to communicate travel stories with friends and family (mostly my mom) from back home. I find that it's much more effective to describe a trip in words and pictures than with Facebook albums and captions. I'm a strong believer that the best moments are never captured on film (because you're too busy enjoying them and making memories!), so I rely on my memory to bring back the great times we've had.

Since arriving in Japan, I've realized that it is very difficult to find directions or reviews to local businesses and restaurants. I think one of my favorite parts of being stationed in Japan with my Marine husband is trying new food, whether it's a new sushi place, a Japanese take on Italian food, okonomiyaki (Japanese omelet with cabbage), yakiniku (grilled meat and veggies), or an izakaya (a place to order drinks and tasty appetizers). I try to take pictures when I'm out and about in interesting new places and review them on this site. Even though tastes are different, hopefully my views can help other people find what they like in Iwakuni. And on the flip side of the coin, please recommend your favorite places that you find here in Iwakuni!

While you're here, please take the time to leave a comment if you enjoyed a post or have a question. I love finding out who reads this little slice of the internet.

Happy travels,

Heather
